The Pogues track is an absolute CC - stunning.
The Waterson/Knight track is very nice
But A has it
A has it

Just so happy to see the Pogues - 'bout time! - and I'm impressed that it's not only a non-Shane-written original, but quite possibly the best. Gotta be A.
B is perfectly lovely, and any Waterson voice is a pleasure to hear - but the guitar tone sinks it a bit and it's not Philip Chevron.

. Got Jimi's autograph after the show and went on to see him several times that year

A was one of the Pogues' weaker songs.

I'm not much of a fan of The Pogues but that was a terrific track with a strong galloping momentum. B was a perfectly serviceable folk tune with a nice vocal arrangement but couldn't really compete here.

There is far too much harmonising going on in B.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 5 Match 4
Hmm. It sounds like there could be a decent track buried in here, but those drums are fucking rubbish, and the thing just sounds like an indie band, it's recorded very politely. Very polished and stripped of all human influence. Could do with more harmolodics.
B's strange, with its bluesy guitar riff and trad folk vocal, they don't really seem to fit together in any kind of coherent fashion. I don't know what to make of it, to be honest, the a capela bits are really nice and seem to show that the guitar is entirely unnecessary. But it's a more interesting, individual sound, and wins this tie. Was that an oboe trying to shoot the track in the foot at the end?

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Sometimes, life's unfair - B is really excellent, I loved the guitar, the harmonies and the sax, but it doesn't stand a chance against Philip Chevron's greatest tune immortalised by Shane and the boys
