Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 4
Hell - what a tough round.
I saw both of them on the same bill back in the day at Camden's Roundhouse. I can't remember Nick's performance but my mate Pete says I was 100% there.....
Black Eyed Dog from the "final 4" recordings of 1974, you can taste the angst and depression seeping from the voice and words. Amazing
The Fairports - I used to run past Nicol's dad's doctors' surgery 'Fairport' in Bounds Green, Muswell Hill back in the early 80s - I know you all know but they used to rehearse upstairs.
A beautiful track with a lovely tune written by Swarb.
The 'trendy voters' are going to go for Drake so to even things up it's The Fairports for me.
So, B has it

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 4
Back to tough call.
Both are obvious artists but less obvious songs. Both among my favorites by the artist.
I"m going to go with B, for the only reasoning I can come up with - it's a song that's less often singled out - less than it deserves. BED is more of a Nick Drake fan's Nick Drake song, if that makes any sense.
Both spooky as hell, though. Wish I could vote for both.

As much as B is a great track from a great album, A is just that bit more special to me.

Another tough call, should vote against Fairport because they are 'obvious', although Drakes is a bit of a cult artist as well so it cuts both ways.
In the end though - Sandys voice sweeps you up.

Re: Folk Cup 2019 Round 3 Match 4
I don't know this Nick Drake track, my opinion of his albums is that the first is magnificent, the second is atrocious, and the third is boring. I guess this is from one of the multivarious posthumous collections. It's quite nice, reminds me of some of Robbie Basho's stuff in a way, obviously not vocally though. Yeah, it's a slight song again, but very pretty.
How come when I'm up against Sandy Denny when she's slogging away through a wretched pub rock song, people vote for her automatically, yet here she is in probably her most successful guise, and there's fewer automatic votes. Difficult tie, even though I'm not a fan of this album, this is a nice proper folk effort. However, I think Nick's track is a bit more intimate, and nicks the vote here.

NIck or Fairport in a folk cup
Like them both but I'm going with the better folk tune.

Black Eyed Dog is chilling and unnerving but there is a beauty there behind the darkness.
The Fairport's track is a lovely pick and I agree with DF that this highlights a much better side to Sandy Denny than in other matches.
A close tie but I'll go B

Toughest tie yet, we are now getting into folk royalty. Fairports take it for Sandy's voice and a more memorable tune. B

Unfortunate pairing, but I'll give my vote to Sandy, Richard and Swarb

B by a distance. Never could stand Drake's voice or lyrics (good guitarist though I reluctantly admit he was), while the opposite applies to Sandy Denny: never was into the Fairports at the time, much too finger in the ear for my late teen tastes, but can take pleasure in them now. But still no love for poor wee misunderstood Nicky

This is better, 2 tracks i really like. A very fragile but pretty ND choice, one that i listen to every so often when the mood swings that way. B is a gem from my fave FC album, and while it is a relatively safe one i do enjoy it more.

Really like both of course, but swaying towards Drake. Never quite got the thing of Liege & Lief as Fairport's best album. Always preferred What We Did On Our Holidays (and Unhalfbricking) though I like L&L just fine. Listening to both now in hindsight Drake sounds the more revelatory.

So there went my 452nd attempt to get what it is people see in old Drakey. This track in particular has always annoyed me with its bluesy vocal inflections.
I would vote for a cat in labour over A but that won't be necessary given the manifest quality of
