This is quite difficult. I am generally in favour of the Teardrops but I like the proto techno of Severed Heads well enough. The fact that I don’t take drugs anymore pushes me towards A.
A it is.

I enjoyed B much more than I thought I would but not enough to beat the mighty TE

I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I much prefer early solo Cope to TE - Fried is a masterpiece and one of my favorite records of the 80s - but A has enough style (Coral Sitar?) and substance (some great lines in there - "love has boiled away") to be the pick here.

I liked B more than I thought - that rush of guitar was nice, as was the dark-humored narrative - but it still had too much of the repetitive qualities I hate about that music. Not bad for what it is, but decidedly not "my" music.

B is ok, but a bit plinky-plonky for my tastes. A is Teardrop Explodes.

My head is about to explode, with all these "new" sounds. I really sat out that decade, and now I need a break. Hoping for a better round two. ABSTAIN

I've never much cared for the Teardrop Explodes but I found this one quite endearing. Their brassier moments always sound tinny and offputting though and this was no exception.

I liked B quite a bit; I've heard Severed Heads before but not this song, and they're one to check out more. I always like those twinkling, interweaving synth sounds like the one here. Might have been better without the voice samples though.

Actually A is The Teardrop Explodes. I've known Julian to get quite upset (in interviews, never met the man) about people dropping the definite article. :-)

a - Yet another single I own(ed) and enjoyed plenty when it came out, although now it sounds much more of a generic 1960s' brassy pop/R&B pastiche than it did then.
b - Never heard of these guys (?) before, but I must say this is the sort of thing I like when I enthuse about synthpop, all sparkle and perk - I thought the intro was very Soft Cell. Not so enthused by the vocals, but at least they're mixed far enough back that I can ignore them. And that burst of guitar abuse is excellent. In truth, it's perhaps a little longer than it needs to be, but never got actively annoying, and probably the best 'new' track I've heard in this round

It's a shame Julian turned his back on writing catchy pop songs because he was bloody good at it. This tends to get overshadowed by some of their other hits (...well 'Reward' anyway) but it's as good as anything they did. A truly joyful, exuberant record which seems to thrill at the sheer joy of being alive.
B was new for me and I liked its more urgent take on Morodor. It had a polished, urbane feel and you could imagine it in a Carpenter movie. Some elements were a bit meh though..that narration and I could have done without that chainsaw noise that comes in around the two minute mark. Decent pick though.

Never got the TE adulation but that track is okay.

The other track is dire - pure and utter piss.

I was ready (again, I really must stop this - we're only on round 1) to castigate B - an unappealing and unfamiliar name - but its decent, not so sure of the noisy bit but its got a perky appeal. Sad for it its against one of Cope's best, a tremendous and vivid track, one of the handful of best picks so far.

Of all the bands that did quite flatly bland pop songs in the 80s, I've always had something of a soft spot for The Teardrop Explodes. It's got that production aesthetic that's really quite deadening, and there's not an awful lot going on, but you always got the impression that Julian was giving it everything and fully believed that he was creating a masterpiece with every track. It's not "Reward", which is their best song by a mile (it is, we've had this discussion before, and it turned out I was right back then, too), but it's ok in that toytown Smiths way.

I'm surprised that people are throwing things up that would definitely be expected on the playlist at Fish Towers, but I never did manage to get hold of much Severed Heads. This is following the Chris Carter style of floaty synth instrumental, much as NO's "Your Silent Face" did, quite a joyful, burbly thing. Surely it deserves some votes for being Australian and not entirely devoid of style or taste? Fange? Yeah, this is the kind of thing I could have on a permanent drip into my veins, it's the kind of sound that keeps my heart pumping. I guess that's reason for many of you to turn it off.
