Despite not being a very nice man (allegedly) Martyn had a great voice, was a great songwriter and knew his way around the frets of a guitar.

A great track choice from a great album.

B did absolutely nothing much for me although was quite pleasant in parts.

An easy one for me

Oh boy, this is a tough one. I've played the hell out of that Rotary Connection track and in most cases it would be the easy and obvious choice here. I've recently become a fan of John Martyn and this is right up my alley. So, just for its freshness to my ears I'm gonna go with A.

Oh, B by a million, million miles. I adore that song, and John Martyn bores the shit out of me

Tough, as I like both. A is beautiful if overfamilar, kind of an obvious choice. I was ready to dock B points for taking so long to get to the point. But by the time it kicked in probably, it turned into a memorable experience.

I have the John Martyn album and it's one of those things I quite like without being able to get too enthusiastic about. There's one standout song, 'I'd Rather Be the Devil', but this one is fine.
I also have the Rotary Connection anthology and to be honest much of it just washes over me as pleasant nothingness, but B is the bomb, if a bit of a hackneyed BCB classic.

I find myself in rare agreement with Penk, I quite like Solid Air, but I don't dig it out very often. I keep meaning to check out his other albums, to see if he did stuff that was as vocally free, without being quite as coffee-table in the overall sound.

I'm pretty sure B has been touched by the hand of Mod. I'm not sure how a song titled "I am the Black Gold of the Sun" avoids accusations of pretentiousness though. But enough passive-aggressive sniping and sneering, this is another song that is on the other side of the tracks from DarknFishy Towers, but I think it does enough here. It could really do without the pompous bloke's vocals, it's a beautifully constructed track, and has everything including next-door's kitchen sink thrown at it, but what I really like is the way they've got some balls-out guitar soloing, but they've had the good sense to use it musically rather than stopping and pointing at it like in all crappy rock tracks.

Two great tracks.

I love the Martyn album and this track in particular with its airy, but warm, layers.
I've gone on about B so much on here in the past that I may have turned people off the track! Certainly I didn't feel I could pick it again, but I'm glad someone else has.

Another clash of the BCB titans, this. Absolutely love both of these but the Rotary Connection track pips it - like Oliver’s Army, it’s undeniable and in any right thinking person’s (it says ‘ere) list of tracks of the decade. It’s coming up for a BCB Cup testimonial but...

B!

A good any time track. The other requires a certain mood. Good match.
