On the absolute flipside to the first match, you can't get a more pedestrian couple of choices than the above (well, you can, someone *did* pick a Nirvana track ffs). And I've never been a fan of either to top it off. But B is better I suppose.

A could be any number of bands... it just happens to be REM.

Even though it's not that good, even by limited REM-in-the-90s standards, A still gets my vote.
I swear, NPR programmers ruined everything in the 90s.

Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 2
I seem to be one of the few who prefers "major label stadium rock" REM to "po-faced indie" REM. I think that the fuller sound fits Stipe's voice better. And this is a simple but catchy song. It's probably ten years or more since I listened to them but I might dig out the album.
There always seems to be some snobbery around Portishead from the so-alt-it-hurts crowd which makes me want to like them more, but I think they only managed two or three real standout moments: a song like this never quite gets going despite some promising bits.

Oh look ma, proper songs with tunes. I enjoyed both of these, albums that were extremely familiar at the time but which I’ve long since shelved with the result being that these tracks, not standouts, have been semi forgotten. Surprising myself for going for that R.E.M. pick, nifty reminder that OOT had more to it than those massive hits.

I'm just wondering whether this tie is gonna divide the Brits vs the Americans.....
Not my favorite track by either but I'll vote for

Re: 90s Cup Round 2 Match 2
A is generic, even by REM standards. They almost seem to be trying to channel The Stone Roses with that flat vocal style, but the drummer kills it dead. Why bother with drums at all, if that's all you're going to do?
Portishead are doing the Portishead thing, the crisp beat, lovely vocals and deep bass thing. Which started out as criticism, but they don't half do it well.

I far prefer ' pedestrian ' to the sounds of Round 2 Match 1.
Out Of Time isn't one of my favourite REM albums, but there are two great tracks on it for me. One is Near Wild Heaven, and the other is
