I almost don't count a lot of the 2nd ska wave covers because the originals were so obscure, but I think you could probably say that about a lot of blues covers in the '60s, which are rock standards now.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Technically I'm not sure you can call 'Gangsters' a cover, Jerry Dammers is credited as writer, even if it was heavily based on 'Al Capone'.
B is an interesting choice. I liked the vocal, but found the musical backing a bit perfunctory.
Anyway I've always loved Gangsters so....A

Re: CC Round 8 Match 9
A barely qualifies as a cover, it's more that they've taken elements from the backing track... but probably just enough. It is a fabulous record when all's said and done.
B is interesting and fun to hear, but doesn't really convince me.

Can anyone in the states point me to somewhere I can actually HEAR B? Can't find it anywhere and the video won't play.

Re: CC Round 8 Match 9
Hmm, ska was an easy choice for the covers cup, I think my familiarity with the originals meant that I kind of forgot about the remakes. "Gangsters" is a cracking track, but as has been mentioned, isn't strictly a cover. I'm not saying I wouldn't have picked it if I'd have thought of it though.
B is pretty much a backing track playing, and someone singing disconnectedly over the top. I guess you could say that about the original, I haven't heard it in ages. I mean, top marks on finding an interesting curio here, I just wish the source material wasn't that particular track.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I repeat:
Seriously, folks - not only can't I play the video, but there isn't another, and the track is not on Spotify, not on last FM, not on Amazon, not even on ITUNES, ffs! - I can't even find a 30-second sample anywhere. Yet two Americans have voted already. How?

So sorry Dave! Again, I check any links and they work perfectly here. And you are missing a very fine cover too.
A is a monster but B deserves the love. Love stuff like this and Ketama....

It is a cover with vocals added isn't it. I don't know how Dammers had the nerve to take a writing credit on that unless it was a credit for writing the lyrics.

There's a group we don't see mentioned every day. Their Songhai is great - with Danny Thompson, a young Toumani Diabaté and produced by Joe Boyd.

a - there's a lot about the Specials I like(d) a lot, but this track's a bit like Marmite, I can take it or leave it. 4 / 10
b – if I could have found a decent version on youtube, HipsterDawg would surely have included The Temple City Kazoo Orchestra's definitive version of Whole Lotta Love in this cup. I generally presume that anyone will make a better version of this band's songs than the originators, seeing as they were so unremittingly dreadful, but I'm not really feeling this, although I enjoy the guitar. Oh yes, it's perked up considerably the more it edged towards hi-life and away from pond-life. 5.5 / 10

I find B just a curio, and A has enough to forget about technicalities and get my vote.
