2. I'll match everyone up with a random opponent for each match.
3. Voting - and this point cannot be stressed enough-- is open to ALL members of BCB.
4. Everyone votes for their preferred list using "A" or "B" format. Make this as clear as possible for me.
5. You may only vote once in each match. Don't cheat with additional aliases.
6. When the time for each round has elapsed, the results are tallied and the loser is announced in each pairing.
7. In the event of a tie vote, both participants submit five songs and there's a tie breaker match.
8. The winner of the tie-breaker goes through to the next round with those tracks added to their list. They don't submit additional tracks for that round.
9. Survivors will go on to duke it out in subsequent rounds, whilst losers should continue to vote and will bitch and moan at will about their sorry state of affairs in the whingeing thread "Bitter Recriminations".
10. A good time or whatever passes for that is had by all.
11. My favorite part of this thing is new discoveries. You may discover new stuff that flips your switch. There is a thread for discussion of such discoveries once the cup is underway.
I think that's it.
Enjoy!

Participants, please get the first ten tracks to me (martha) via PM by February 8th.
We will kick it all off with ROUND ONE beginning on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2017.
Your PM should look something like this but with different songs....
Please note the proper way to format links due to the Spam filter being a bitch from hell and no one wanting a big string of videos to obscure the list itself.
CORRECT METHOD:
Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr89yq2wC9o
Extreme - More Than Words https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrIiLvg58SY
Incorrect methods
Incorrect method 1:
Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back Link
Extreme - More Than Words Link
(On the surface this looks ideal right? But although neat and tidy and lovely, large lists of properly formatted URL's seem to do the spam filters head in. Because it's a bastid.)
Incorrect method 2:
Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back
Extreme - More Than Words
(Simply too cumbersome and load heavy for two lists of 35 tracks.)

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
Excellent stuff, Martha!
Just a thought:
Are you sure sending lists with the complete hot links will work?
IIRC, in recent cups Ange and Maarts have asked to remove one of the square brackets to avoid being thrown off board by the spam filter.
And I don't want to nag, but 48 hours for 20 tracks will make it difficult to listen properly to everything.

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
I'm fine with a longer time for matches.
Ah... rather than leaving a bracket off just post the URL without using the phpbb code or any brackets whatsoever.
I'm also fine with not doing it over weekends if that's better for folks.
I'm fine with not starting until later if more people want to join... I just added Ray and Fartpants today.
I just want it to be fun for everybody, so whatever works best is what I'll do.

Banning prog and classic rock?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
I imagine 48hs will be too short a timespan to give each match their proper due too, I agree. However, I've had the experience before where extending things to too long a timeframe made the interest for such cups gradually dissolve and so on. I do reckon 96hs could be good, though mind, it's my opinion on it.
Also I'm a tad late in this proposition, but I reckon it might be worth considering for next year: have you guys tried out before to limit the lists based on total time instead of the total number of tracks? It could be an interesting exercise, as right now I imagine the lists could vary anywhere between a duration of 25 and 65 minutes. It could be interesting to place a time restriction and see how each participant would go about distributing it (and it'd play right into Fish's request as well ).

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
Well FWIW I think limiting it to a certain running time is pretty restrictive -- an interesting idea but it's not the BCB Cup to me. Mind you if someone wants a mixtape club where it's got to fit on a cassette tape sometime that's a cool concept.
Banning prog and classic rock? I ban it routinely on my lists. My lists are usually straight punk, post punk and darkwave. This is why I do not win the cup. My lists are "too white" "too 80's" and "too goth". I LOVE hearing that from the same 3 BCBers every year. It's so insightful. What's on the list is all up to the individual. That's what makes it interesting.

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
We have always had a 48-hour window for every match in the BCB Cup. Except for the first couple of tournaments, over a decade ago (!) when it was just a day.
Make them any longer and we will be here until Christmas and there will only be four people who can be bothered voting any more.

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
It's been awhile since I've been on here I guess.... I spent about 20 seconds looking for the like button around Penks post....
FWIW, I concur. I never found the 48hrs too short except once when I had plans that kept me away from the computer for 3 days and I couldn't vote. I think having a lot of time would change things dramatically ....certainly for me it would remove much of the tension and urgency of the thing... which is part of what makes the cup fun for me.

Re: The 2017 BCB Cup Rules and Announcements
The following people are sadly...delinquents.
Your first ten tracks are now overdue.
joels344
Buddha B-Rex
toomanyhatz
Neige
***edited***
am proposing a Play-In Game. to resolve two issues.
1. The late lists. We have 4 people who did not get their lists to me on time.
2. The late sign-ups. We have 4 people who signed up after the cut off point of 32.
4 people haven't sent their lists in to me by the cut-off time of midnight GMT Wednesday as I requested. Without them we would have a nice power of 2 make up of 32 players, thus eliminating the need for seeding and byes etc... but they want to play and I do really want everyone who wants to play to be able to play.
So...rather than boot them out I've decided to do a Play-in Game. The play-in game will be a competition between the four players with as yet unreceived LATE lists and the 4 players who signed up AFTER the list was capped.* These 8 people would go head to head in two person matches with THREE tracks each.
Play-in participants would be those with late lists:
joels344
Buddha B-Rex
toomanyhatz
Neige
and those who signed up after the 32 player.
Johnny Fartpants
driftin
The Fish
Jumper K
Hopefully that is acceptable to everyone.
All 8 of these players must send me 3 tracks more or less immediately for the play-in game-- they don't need to be tracks from your cup lists at all -- just 3 great tracks of your choosing for a Play-In game. We'll then vote and thereby eliminate 4 players, after which we will kick off the official cup.
Of course this presupposes that I will actually get the three play in tracks from the 8 players and that the four late lists will come in today.
If I don't get the ten tracks and three play in track from the late folks by 3:00 pm MST TODAY we'll just have to kick it off without them. I will be eliminating the four players who didn't get their lists to me in time - Joels344, Budda B-Rex, toomanyhatz, and Neige, sorry guys.
For full disclosure, Joel was locked out of the boards and Neige has said he'll get them to me on his lunch break...

I find that this year I'm liking it more for discovery than competition. Like you, Martha, I have a listening niche (most of my favorite songs are heart-achey) that doesn't fly with the general listener-ship.

Have we only got 48 hrs to parse 16 lists of 10 songs? Madness.

Sometimes the links aren't broken so much as they are inaccessible from the country in which you are viewing them.
When I find errors in how the links are formatted (and nearly everyone's were incorrectly formatted when they submitted them) I have edited and fixed them. It's actually a hell of a lot of work. And if I accidently do it wrong the spam filter blocks me out for an hour so have a little patience please as it's not as if I get paid for this

I don't have any issues with multi-line thread titles so maybe it's an issue with your device settings or your screen size if you're on a phone or tablet rather than a computer. Either way lighten up Francis.
