I've been listening a fair bit to the new Big Big Train and this, the final track is indeed a beautiful closer on this album. Nice build-up, bit of symphonia in the arrangement and not too much Phil Collins in the vocal.

The Renaissance-track on another day would have done me but tonight it sounds a bit plodding and amateurish.

The Big Big Train was nice, but, for me, way too close to those ballads that became Phil Collins stock in trade, particularly from his second solo album on. I also felt the song dragged on a bit and by the time of the big solo at the end, it had lost me.

A Trip To The Fair wins my vote, although I can see how, with this one, you might say it takes its time to get going. Not for me though. I love the way it builds and being a big fan of funfairs myself when I was a kid, I just find it very evocative. Beautiful vocals, as always, from Annie Haslam and a song that has great flow and a lovely conclusion:

There used to be a clip on youtube of A Trip To The Fair with footage of the film "A Carnival of Souls" and they worked together beautifully. I tried to find the clip to use instead of the link sent to me but it seems to have gone.

The second match of round one for group two. The first match was posted at 4.11 am. Or are there goung to be five match 1s?

Group 1 and Group 2 are both up with their first matches of the opening round. Five matches in each round. Nine rounds in total. Two points for a win, one point for a draw. Two groups fighting it out. One final between the eventual winners of each group. One ultimate victor. It could be you.

Is my numbering system confusing?

How about:
Round 1 - Group 1 Match 1
Round 1 - Group 2 Match 1

or

Round 1 - Match 1 Group 1
Round 1 - Match 1 Group 2

... but the big big train blew me away. i have never heard it. why do you people not tell me these things? haven't i been a good kath, yew fucquepickles? sniffff. that track has actually gotten me all worked up. i'm gonna go outside and smoke, here at 4:52am (fucquepickles.)

I've liked everything I've heard from Big Big Train and this is no exception although I much preferred the second half of the song to the first which veered a little too close to syrupy Phil Collins territory - the second half was more syrupy Marillion territory which is more acceptable.

The Rennaissance track is probably my favourite of theirs. It's quite an eerie tune and captures the feel of an empty fairground really well. I often work in theme parks after-hours and enjoy that ambience and this song captures it perfectly. Shame I couldn't find that "Carnival of Souls" video.

The Big Big Train song is a bit too 'big ballad-y' for me A, sorry.
The Rennaissance tune has an interesting structure, and some nice changes in feel as it progresses.

I think Lord Rother is about to pop his top...he has been touting this album for the last month or so. I picked it up last week and played the hell out of it on my way to the US. It is very good

As far as the numbering etcetera goes...just thinking it wouldn't be necessary at all to highlight whether it was from group one or two- not knowing who the entrant may be is part of the fun and not knowing from which group it came makes it even harder to guess....

well, then he better let the damn groundhog drive, although that doesn't mean he put the track up. last time, someone put up some big big train, and it warn't him. besides, i don't see everyyyyyything that happens on this board, dammit, even when i'm watching. i'm usually playin with perty pics and synch listening and cheap trickin and birthdayin and bitchin at somebody all at the same time, whilst burnin down my own kitchen.

people around here callin it ballady... like that's necessarily a bad thing. being ballady might be it's primary mode, i don't really care what mode it's called by people... but there is alll manner of stuff goin on inside of there that is just awesome. awesome. it really did get me all worked up. that doesn't happen all THAT often to me. although it did inside of yer cup list. mwhaha.

nowt against renaissance, of course. as i said, i luvv that band. i dig that track. maybe i'm just too familiar with it, ya know? sometimes, impact uber alles.

did i or did i NOT say that i would refuse to think about any of that?

maybe TCE should throw a few over on us all and suddenly pair up a song from kath group alpha against whateverothergroup.

seriously, maybe y'all pay closer attention to these things, but i don't even try to figure out who's behind a track. even if i have a glimmer of a notion, who actually cares? if i *think* i might kinda know a song is carlsson's or the ogre's or yers or maryann's... what does that matter? i' still gonna vote for the song i luvv the most. on a song by song level, really... anyone can put up anything. it's all about the songs.

have you met bruford yet, huhhuhhuh?? you best be spilling, whenever sumthin happens.

I keep having too much trouble keeping focus with A .....it bores me...

B grabbed me more, despite the annoying accent: "faihh" (fair), "thaihh" (there) .....but the song had more interesting things going on, enough to sustain me, and not feel tempted to skip ahead.... So therefore my vote is:

-----------> B

I used to be the board's Big Big Train evangelist although I seem to have conceded that role to Lord Rother. Both the English Electric albums, parts 1 and 2, are wonderful but this is possibly the last track I would have chosen from them. It does veer dangerously close to power ballad territory and the syrup could rot your teeth.

I like the Renaissance. It's overlong and I found the subject matter slightly annoying, it was a bit like someone describing their not very interesting dream. But it builds nicely and it has Annie Haslam on it who can do almost no wrong.

B but any other BBT track would have been A.

It's necessary for me or else I'll forget which match was from which group, especially when there are 10 matches up!
