You guys have made excellent choices. I can't wait to re-enjoy those movies.

Still mulling over my choice. I'm thinking about The Fifth Element.

Bad news for any that don't have it - The Conformist is not available on Region 2 DVD, which I find fairly incredible. Oh well, I'll enjoy the thread!

A really interesting choice Algroth, especially as I suspect a number of posters (well me anyway) won't have seen it.
However I am struggling to ascertain its availability on DVD. But as you're down the list we wouldn't get round to the discussion of it for a good five months. So it might be worth hanging on and seeing how available it is nearer the time. There has just been a blu-ray release, and it's possible the DVD release will follow.

As you said, it was very recently released on Blu-Ray by Eureka (part of the Master Of Cinema collection) on Blu-Ray, so at least in UK it should be easy to get a hold of (at least for those with the technology availiable). I'm not sure how the policy here is regarding downloading/file sharing, but if you're interested here's a standard version availiable for download:

That said, I'm not sure if what I'm doing is cheating somewhat as I've seen the film already and I'm not sure if there is a rule against choosing a film one is familiar with (didn't see any on the OP). I would definitely like to rewatch this on Blu-Ray myself, though, and I think it's a very interesting, complex and ambiguous film that will surely bring up plenty of good discussion while still providing a good three hours of proper entertainment.

Thanks for the links!
I know rapidshare has download limits but given I've got four months or so to download it, then there's no excuse! Let's hope the links remain active for a while.
Nothing wrong with choosing a film you've already seen btw, in fact I'd say it's what most people have done.

Hey there, I was wondering whether I was a bit late, typing this on an internet cafe, but I should be back home properly this weekend. Anyway, I think my two selections- I could even make it a double bill if I'm allowed!- should be easy enough to track down, both have been recently remastered and reissued on very nice DVDs.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Well I'm quite happy for Matthew to have two choices if everyone else is cool with it. I'm particularly interested to see how people will react to Peeping Tom.

I've updated the second post, on the first page, with the films chosen and the schedule we will be undertaking. I think we should begin doing this next month. I don't think there's any point closing the sign up, so you can still sign up at any time -just add your name to the list.

If the sign-up goes on indefinitely, we could very well start the film club this month. It's faster and won't really have any negative repercussions on the idea as a whole.

That said, I'm also sure many people would have suggested very interesting films as second choices. There's no problem by me if two choices by Matthew are allowed, I've seen one of those and I think it's great (The Red Shoes), but it seems like we should then open the possibility for other users to propose a second choice as well.

I'm trying to give people some time to get hold and watch the films.
It'll probably be easier if I ask Matthew to make a choice over his two films.

Oh, that's understood! I was just being a bit cheeky in suggesting a double-bill of sorts- I was going to do a compare and contrast about them in the same post, because, as wildly different as they are superficially, they do share a surprising amount of common ground (not just the director), but if it buggers things up a bit, I think I'll just choose The Red Shoes and do the other one later.

Well, I'm hoping to get my hands on 'Amores Perros' in the next couple of weeks, so I should be in for the first one.
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

I'm thinking of choosing Shane Carruth's Primer.

Does that seem okay or is it too deliberately obscure or arty? I see it's available via Love Film and Netflix.

Mainly I just want people to talk about it with. Nobody I know saw it except a couple of people here years ago.

That film has generated a strong cult audience so I doubt it should be hard to find on the internet. I've been meaning to check that out myself, so I'm glad you picked it.

I've been thinking of what film I'd like to rewatch in this context and it's difficult to know what to do; most of my picks will be familiar to most, so there's unlikely to be anything novel involved, so I just ended up selecting something from the shelves that I fancied watching again: Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye. Hope that's not cropped up before*

I can probably try to watch a movie a week given my various commitments, so looking forward to starting...

* Just noticed, it hasn't.
