Quite a few I'd imagine, but I'm certainly not going to be totting them up. Some snooty French academic telling me 'this is what you need to see' is more likely to have me running to the nearest blockbuster.

If you must go by critics/academics, you can do worse than Cahiers. After all, they were the first to champion Ray, Fuller, Siegel, Sirk, all that lot. Looking over the list, it's very canon, and I get your point, sometimes you just need to break free and enjoy the mainstream. Let's hear it for the mainstream!

Hmm I partly like this list because it has some untypical choices amidst the usual Citizen Kane/North by Northwest picks.

But on the other hand, their choices are a little perverse in places. E.g. I can think of a handful of John Huston films I like more than The Dead, and Some Came Running with Frank Sinatra is good but hardly irreplaceable.

It's Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers, and more enjoyable than some of the Panthers. I happen to like their collaborations, and it fits right in there.

Funny little list. Why the hell would I want to watch The Party?

It does have lots of quotable bits I guess but it has dated considerably. Still not as shit as Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Yeah I know all that, I used to teach all that history. There probably was a time when I was quite influenced by that sort of thing and knowing the history can give you an important context to appreciate things, but these days I prefer to go along my own quixotic path rather than think "Oooh I've not seen that Truffaut one yet that's on the list, I'd better get that ticked off!"

For me, it's part of running out of time, getting older. Even if I were to see all the Truffaut's, by the time I'd get to the last ones, I'd already have forgotten the first ones that I saw. It's a futile sport, and your chosen path could easily be more rewarding, certainly more fun.

I felt the same, pretty much.

Still - I like looking at lists like this 'cos it reminds you of films you might have forgotten about, or sends you off on another little voyage of discovery.

Is the list ranked in order of greatness? If so, then the highest-rated Godard is Le Mepris, which I saw the other night and thought was rubbish (and I enjoyed the three or four other Godards I saw).

There's several I've never heard of. 22 year old me would be shocked at this insubordination. 34 year old me just wants to play Red Dead Redemption 2.

I think it's random, although there are some biggies up front. Number 2 is Night of the Hunter, never seen that rated so high before - but you never know with the Cahiers crowd.
