Kevin Spacey's "Beyond the Sea"

..and why not?

Kevin Spacey's "Beyond the Sea"

Kevin Spacey has directed a modern musical that works! Beautifully shot and choreographed biopic on Bobby Darin, one of America's most beloved entertainers. The song and dance numbers blend seamlessly with the partly fictionalized dramatic scenes. I nominate this as one of the best films of the noughties. When they get it right, as witnessed here, the musical is most potent. Now I want to get the Rhino box set. Didn't know that Bobby Darin had written so many songs himself.

I liked it very much myself. I thought the writers did a very good job of getting what's interesting about the subject dramatic and Spacey seems to be having the time of his life playing that guy. what a fan he must be, it's uncanny in places despite niggles about Spacey's age. I think he pulled it off. I think it's a swell bio but keep in mind I've seen "You're Cheating Heart" with George Hamilton at least half a dozen times.

It's been ages since I saw it and I remember quite liking it. I don't really remember much else.

It's one of those films that easily holds up to repeated viewings.

I'm inclined to get one or both of the original album series boxes than the Rhino set.

I think most of his big stuff is on Atlantic, but according to wiki he recorded for others - Decca, Motown etc. Of course you might be making a joke.

My thinking is simply that for £18 one ends up with ten albums. Some of the stuff may be less good, but there you go - I may just get one of the sets. With the Rhino set, you get a good career overview and decent notes - which I agree are tempting.

In that case the box set will be necessary. ;)

Yes - in this case I think the price isn't worth it for someone in whom I only have mild interest

So you won't get the Doctor Dolittle album, then. :)
