A is the kind of 70s funk I really dig. The tune may be nothing special but frankly who cares when the groove and arrangement are this good.
Did enjoy the Mingus, but it didn't give me quite the same kind of thrill as A.

A: w-w g. There's five points gone already. The voices were all right in a sub-Sly way, but it was a chore to listen to it all, really. 2 / 10
B: Didn't listen to more than a minute or two of this, but that's enough to beat A

A is the kind of thing I love - I'm sure it's on one of those great funk comps I love to collect - but it's ultimately a bit non-descript by comparison to what the genre's capable of.

Mingus, on the other hand, is a giant to me. Doesn't have the quirky charm of Monk, or the intensity of Coltrane, or the diversity of Miles, but as a composer he's as good as it gets. And that's one of his signature tunes. So that would be a B.

If I loved A just a smidge more, I could justify voting that way, but...

I remember last year when, I think, Sarge picked George McCrae's I Get Lifted. Now I truly love that track, but it went up against a Mingus track- I want to say Blues and Roots and the match up seemed laughable to me. I loved that there was a competition where Mingus got his just due.

Year 2 of the competition and Mingus is still getting his just due. Look, no one in their right mind is going to say Phoney People by Father's Children is a better track than Pithecanthropus Erectus. PE is the track that announced the arrival of the fully formed Mingus; illustrating the breadth of his ambition as a composer, but at this point it feels like rooting for the Yankees or Standard Oil.

The question is: is there something to the challenger's pick? And in this case the answer is clearly yes. As G has suggested the groove and the arrangement are top shelf and I also love the vocals: "Your hair is straight again cause you're back with your uptown friends."

A is a decent bit of funk but the Mingus is too strong for it.

Yes! My competition last year was pretty much 8 rounds of people saying "I really like [my pick] but I just can't vote against [jazz giant]" and I'm clearly not over it twelve months on. So, apologies to B, who has picked a great tune by an artist I love, but I obviously have unresolved cup issues that I need to work through and a vote for A (which I genuinely dig anyway) will help.

It hurts to vote against 'PE' , monster that it is, but A is a great little find for me. With apologies to B...
