Upcoming board software upgrade.

Postby JQW » 24 Oct 2014, 10:52

Within a few days we hopefully will be seeing the release of the new version of phpBB, version 3.1.

The main feature is better support for mobile devices, by automatically adjusting the page dimensions to properly match the screen size. The Tapatalk client may still be needed to support some lower specification phones. Other major features that affect end users include enhanced notification support and the ability to log in via a third-party account such as Facebook or Google. There's also a whole host of technical and administration based updates.

I intend to get the update installed soon after it's released, most likely one weekend in November. I hope to keep Tapatalk installed, but that depends on a compatible version of the Tapatalk plugin appearing promptly.

Thanks, Jethro.
Will there be more color-combination options, and/or the ability for us to delete our own posts?

I can't give a definite answer on the colour scheme options until the software gets a proper release tomorrow. I believe that it comes packaged with one working scheme, but with some others installed but disabled by default.

Likewise I've not seen the final admin screens, so I'm not sure as to the options regarding deletion of posts. I suspect that they won't have changed.

I've got hold of the software now. There's only one board style included in the package - the standard ProSilver one. The development kit for creating new styles only got uploaded last week, so as yet no other style modifications, even simple re-colourings of ProSilver, have been approved.

It looks like the old subsilver2 style has finally been killed off.

So the only style that doesn't cut photos in half is going to go? Fuckit, that's a real blow.

ProSilver has been heavily modified in the new version, and I believe that image handling has been improved.

I'll postpone the update until I can find a choice of styles. This means either waiting for new ones to be released, or having a go at doing them myself with the various style kits. It's not possible to run the old and new board side by side.

Cheers, J, I really appreciate this

Everytime I try and update for the past few days I get a Forbidden message. Sometimes I can do one post ok but the next time I get Forbidden.

Is this a problem with my account?
