Thunderclap Newman UK dates

Postby Quaco » 12 Mar 2010, 10:35

As some of you may know, Andy "Thunderclap" Newman has been dragged back into the music business from being an electrician, and is now performing Thunderclap Newman songs with a band. The band includes Mark Brzezicki on drums/vocals and Josh Townshend (Simon's son, Pete's nephew) on guitar.

Last year, he had a previous band called Thunderclap Newman Band, but he's switched to a different group of people. Based on evidence on YouTube, this new arrangement seems preferable.

They've done two shows so far. The next three dates are:

May 14 - Inn on the Green, Shepherd's Bush
May 20 - The 12 Bar, Swindon
June 4 - The Brook, Southampton

I would be there if I could! Let me know if you go!

They played the Farrington Hootenany, the next village to me at the end of February. £5 a ticket. Sadly I had crochet lessons that day so I unfortunately had to give Mr Newman a miss.

I really find this quite bizarre. A one hit wonder band formed by Pete Townsend for his roadie in 1969, whose most talented member is long dead. And only featuring Tony Newman from the original line up, who doesn't write the material, or sing. And apparently they only ever played 5 gigs. It's a cover band essentially, isn't it? With nothing to cover. They released one very average album, so if they're performing that you're not exactly in for a treat.
p€nk wrote:B is more consistent, but only because they just copied the tracklisting of a compilation CD they bought in Tesco in 1973.

My man, that's a matter of taste. I feel it's an excellent album! (For what it's worth, I believe it's well thought-of generally. From your statement, I can't tell if you know the album and found it wanting, or just kind of assumed it was average.) I think that despite a minuscule output, every song they did was good.

While Speedy Keen was the songwriting heart of the band, Andy Newman definitely was a one-off. It was his piano interludes that made the band sound so different. He was the namesake of the group, and its one truly unique component. Even though he wasn't the writer or singer, to me this isn't quite as bizarre as you make it out to be!
