British English Mac spell checker?

Is Windows playing up yet again? Got hit by yet another piece of spyware? Got some other problem? PC & Mac problems solved, maybe.

British English Mac spell checker?

Postby BlueMeanie » 11 Mar 2010, 15:20

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard everything I write gets spell checked in American English. This is bloody infuriating. I've check that everything is set to British English in System Prefs but to no avail. Can anyone advise me on what to do next?

Cheers.

Go to System Preferences, Language & Text, Text. What's Spelling set to here?

British English. It was set to American but I changed it. Hasn't made any difference though.

Yep, it has no problems with that!

I've checked Apple's support discussion boards, and there's several others with the same problem. The only fixes that worked were to re-install the whole operating system, or to install a third-party custom dictionary and then manually force all of your applications individually to use it.

I'd wait until Mac OS X 10.6.3 appears before doing anything really drastic, as these kinds of problems tend to get fixed in maintenance releases. All indications are that 10.6.3 should be appearing very soon, in time for updated versions of the Mac Pro line to appear next Tuesday.

I'll wait then. Seems I can't manually force Safari into changing dictionaries. Thanks for the help, I'll wait for the next upgrade.

Well, there were no Mac Pro models announced today, but Intel did announce that their new range of high-end processors are out, so I'd expect the new models to now appear next week, with 10.6.3 appearing by then too.

I've also seen a list of the bugs fixed in 10.6.3, and there's several fixes to the spellchecking system, but it doesn't go into any real details as their precise nature.

I believe we should see the release of 10.6.3 later today. Settlers 7 is being released tomorrow, and that lists 10.6.3 as a pre-requisite for installation.

Mac OS X 10.6.3 is now out. It's a big update - at least 438MB.

Took a while but it seems to have fixed the problem.
