Vocalese version of "'Round Midnight"

Postby Count Machuki » 01 Feb 2010, 17:27

We had some good times laughing at how silly this song was back at Deluca's Market.

It's a jazz vocal version of Monk's 'Round Midnight. WIkipedia would have me believe that these folks covered it:

Mel Tormé, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Chris Connor, and Julie London.

But I don't think it was any of them.

It's a really over the top, exaggerated vocal...like somebody doing a deliberately cheezy Johnny Hartman impression. Male singer...could be somone like King Pleasure...?

Any ideas?
I plan to stay a believer.

Bobby McFerrin, who's never been known for restraint, did a version for the mid 80's film starring Dexter Gordon. Might be that--the album was a pretty big hit for jazz.

Thought that might be it, but I think he just does the vocal trumpet thing on that.

The one I'm looking for also has (silly) words.

Thanks, though.
