New mashup

Postby chrischrischris » 12 Jul 2010, 20:32

Thanks to the wonderful Quaco who has sent me some stunning multitracks, I've been inspired to do my first mashup in three years.

The Beatles: Something / Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell: Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

Ditt fucking o!

Seriously, chris, you have a real talent for this. Just do more, whether you're inspired or not. Three years? That's shameful!

Well, having not done anything for so long, I've lost a lot of faith in my 'ability' - in fact, the only reason this one happened was because I accidentally opened the Something and Ain't No Mountain High Enough multitracks at the same time.

Anyway, thank you for the nice comments which have inspired me, so there will be more things appearing soon...

You have focussed on using multitracks for your work, but I suppose you could also use parts of records where there is only one instrument or voice. Have you thought much about that? Maybe you have, and this is just an obvious idea from someone who doesn't do this sort of thing...

Believe me I have! But there are a lot of bits of software out there now that 'filter' out tracks (vocals, guitar, bass, drums etc) and these are just more interesting to play around with and - hopefully - to listen to.

The multitracks you sent me are especially exciting as I can use guitar solos to add a bit of flourish here and there, or throw a few backing vocals in. It really opens up a whole new world.

I've just done another track using your multitracks. Octopus's Garden, I Am The Walrus and What's Going On (apologies to everyone) - and as well as mixing the vocals to the backing, the multitracks let you mess around with the arrangement much more.

Have a listen and you'll see what I mean: http://www.mashups.blogspot.com

Not only are you using little bits of the guitar solos in different ways, but it sounds like you also flipped one of the "ooh"s from "I Am the Walrus" at one point. It would be cool to no more backwards stuff like that!

I love what you did with those. The only criticism I had was that "What's Going On" sets up a slow vibe, then Ringo's voice has the lines of the song coming one after another, more quickly. I was trying to imagine if it would be possible to double each chord of the backing so Ringo could sing the song more leisurely. "I'd like to be..." pause "under the sea" pause. It's an idea anyway. Love the scat singing vibe of the "Walrus" stuff mixing with Marvin Gaye on the jamming bits.

By the way, Loveless was the one who gave me the tracks, so I can't claim all the credit. None in fact!

I know it's an old one, but I like "Walrus Confusion"!
