Pts. 1, 2, & 3
Excellent choices, btw.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Okay. Guess I'll take a stab at the impossible:
Doing it to Death
Papa Don't Take No Mess
Cold Sweat
...or pretty much any track named thus far.

Yeah, James pretty much fell off after he left Federal Records, huh, Muskrat?
(great, great songs, tho. I love deep James as much as funky James)

I'm just not a big fan of the funk.

What kind of universe puts you at Wattstax and not me?
*sigh*

Depends on one's definition of "funk," I suppose. At Wattstax, I'd say that Rufus Thomas qualified (certainly his hot pants did), but most of the others -- Isaac Hayes, Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, Staple Singers, Little Milton, Albert King, Temptrees, Mel & Tim, etc. -- were more old-school. I had a good time.

Yep, pretty much, but the skeletal, confrontational funk of "Give It Up (or Turnit Loose), the magnificently pent-up "I Don't Mind" and the near avant-funk of "The Big Payback" are the three that move me today. It's fascinating listening to the Star Time! boxset, actually, although there are very set periods, there's also a clear sense of development throughout, often you can hear the moment he shifts towards a new stage in a single track, and he'll go down that path for the next half-dozen (erm, as represented by the set).
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Re: Your Top 3 tracks by James Brown
So many great tracks - and so many tracks on albums that are top notch as well. I've bought up a fair few over the years (including all the singles collection compilations which are just damn near undeniable) and the quality control is pretty damn great.
With that said,
1. Bewildered - Paris '71
2. The Payback
3. Out of Sight
I'm leaving out the '68 version of 'Cold Sweat' because it has been mentioned already. A giant. And I haven't even mentioned the fact that I have ignored his earlier 'soul' stuff - an incredible singer and damn near one of my favourites.

Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

Great, great track. I'd almost forgotten about it.
