Mudshark's Dutch Prog thread got me listening to this again. It will be of no use to most of you. Shark and Never/Ever excepted.
Boudewijn De Groot - Picknick
After releasing two albums as a troubadour Boudewijn reinvented himself on this third album as a master of the flower power and recorded an album that used every George Martin trick in the book plus the kitchen sink. In this case being the 'tin can horns'. Lushly orchestrated, self invented sound effects all of it recorded in a 4 track studio.
Came out in 1967 too but after the Beatles' release.
Has to be the Sgt Pepper of the Lowlands.
If you should come across it and are a fan of that kind of sound, give it a listen.

Looks like he may have gotten The Fool to do the cover art!
I have seen references to this before and am intrigued.

Yes! The Fool did the design. It's a Dutch design group. Amongst other things they did the painting on Clapton's Gibson he used during the Cream period, Lennon's Rolls Royce and on Apple's record's London premises. Initially the album had 2 titles. Side 1 was called Picknick and and side 2 The Garden of Lusts. An interesting album but I'm not a big fan. "inspired by Sgt. Pepper" is a bit of an understatement. Rip-off is a better depiction. The Sitar sounds are virtually the same but I'm pretty sure George didn't play on the album. It's an interesting LP because it's very different to everything he did before and after.

And at least a few other album covers (one of them their own)...

I've never heard of this. Thanks for the post!
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Clearly you're not a big fan
It's of its time of course. And what to make of his next album 'Nacht en ontij'?
Just two long pieces of music. Eelco Gelling played guitar on that one.

Re: The Dutch 'Sgt Pepper'
I'm about halfway through the album, and enjoying it very much.
My two cents, so far: while undoubtedly inspired by what the Beatles were doing (who wasn't?), to me it really doesn't sound a thing like Pepper (I'm not complaining!). The songwriting certainly isn't Lennon/McCartney-esque, and the orchestrations don't have Martin's flavor. What it does sound uncannily like - and I have to assume this is coincidence - is a Tropicália album circa 1968, but with Dutch lyrics instead of Portuguese.
Very interesting - thanks for the turn-on!

Maybe I'm too harsh. It's been a couple of decades since I heard the album. Out of respect for you guys I'll give it another listen.

I'm not a big fan of 'Picknick', but 'Nacht en ontij' is genius!
I don't know that many black masses set to music, but I'm pretty sure it's my favorite.

That's much more intriguing!

I enjoyed it. The singer's voice didn't sound right for this kind of material, but otherwise this is the kind of stuff I love to discover.
