Hello! Just back from thrift, where I bought doubles of "Free Up" by Big Mountain. It is not very rootsy at all, more like cod reggae to my ears. Obviously the duplicate will be traded in at Accord, but that gets me thinking, do I need Big Mountain at all? Think poor man's UB40, and you are getting there. More cod than UB40, but not as cod again as 10cc with their "Dreadlock Holiday". How do you feel about cod reggae? Where do you stand?
How cod reggae is Big Mountain and where do you draw the line?

There is so much quality reggae out there that I don’t have in my life that I’ve never had to worry myself too much where to draw these lines. It’s never come to that.

Well, exactly. That would normally be my approach, too. But cod reggae comes cheap here, 50 p in thrift, and at that price, it can be mighty tempting. Sometimes it is just one track, like Dreadlock Holiday, very few bands made a career out of cod. "Sunshine Reggae" is a modern classic, though, I recommend it without reservation.
