7" Single Edit

Postby The Slider » 21 Jan 2021, 18:53

Here is what I think is an anomily

James' single Born of Frustration runs some 5.32ish - reasonably long for a 7" single. It is the same edit on both the 12" and CD singles too.
When it was released on the album Seven, a month or so later, it appeared in a version some 70 seconds shorter (4.22) missing the 15 second intro and a few lines / stanzas during the course of the song (though it is the same recording - just edited)

Aside from specially extended 12" remix type nonsenses, can we think of any other cases where the regular 7" single version of a song is longer than the album?

The (Young) Rascals' "It's Wonderful" 45 had an 8-second intro and a demented coda that were chopped off when the song subsequently appeared on LP (Once Upon A Dream, Time Peace).

I don't know if this counts but '17' which was the B-side of Jethro Tull's 'Sweet Dream' and was a non-album track ran for over 6 minutes [nearly 6:30 I recall].

It later appeared as a bonus track on a remastered versions of "Stand Up but before that, I think, on one or two compilations in a much shortened version - about 3 minutes and faded after about 20 seconds of fantastic instrumental meandering.

Yes. Slider-lad, I think I'll claim that one [if I've read the question correctly]

The 7" version of Queen's "I Want to Break Free" is about a minute longer than the album version.

Marillion's Lavender was expanded from the 2:27 album version to 3:40 single version after adding a chorus and expanding the guitar solo. Most of their other songs had to be reduced in length for single release.

The Mothers Of Invention's "Lonely Little Girl" is just over a minute long on We're Only In It For The Money and 2:44 on the 45... but that's a bit of a cheat: the 45 is actually a medley of that song and "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", plus maybe 20-odd seconds of material exclusive to the 45.

Of course! The 1:44 "Outdoor Miner" by Wire was given an additional verse, chorus, and piano solo to make it a 2:51 single.

Get Back?

There's an extra bit at the end of the single version, the 'Get back Loretta' bit.
But then Spector added some talking bits to the album version and I'm not sure which one ended up being the longer.
Bugger off.

I've checked and apparently the single version is 7 seconds longer.

That piano solo is an abomination.

So there are a few good answers there.
It is not unprecedented but it seems quite unusual.

are they not two different recordings?
If they are (and the single version's appearance on Past Masters might indicate that that is the case) then it doesn't count.
But a valiant spot all the same.

Edit: Wiki claims the same recording but very differently processed

Same recording - Phil just added some rooftop ambience.

Well spotted Charlie. You've passed the test!

I uploaded that a while back for BCB use only 8-)

Back in the day, 17 was one of the first songs I wanted to see on CD and in stereo. It drove me crackers when it appeared in edited form and Ian Anderson criticized it. What does he know?!
