David Gates, forgotten

Postby Walk In My Shadow » 01 Dec 2020, 16:05

So, the music of Bread may be a little sugary to most of you.
But let's not forget what great songs David Gates wrote:

Make it with you
Baby I'm-a want you
If
It don't matter to me
Everything I own
Lost without your love
Aubrey
Sweet surrender
Diary
Guitar man

About every two years I get out my Bread cd's and give them a good listen. Sentimental reasons.

I bet Googamooga likes Bread.

I count myself a modest fan. When they were good, they were very good.

He also wrote the Murmaids' delightful "Popsicles And Icicles", and his "Saturday's Child" was recorded by both The Monkees AND Herman's Hermits. And he superbly produced Captain Beefheart's early 45s.

And wrote "Moonchild!"

I don't think he's forgotten - I can say for sure that those of my friends that appreciate late-60s urban pop production (and I have a lot of friends that describes!) rate him quite highly.

I do find most Bread stuff pretty sappy, but "Aubrey" and "Guitar Man" in particular are pretty cool. The guy had skills.

Funny you should single out "Aubrey" - I think that's the sappiest of all! Pretty tune, but the lyrics are nothing.

You started off with my two least favorite Bread songs! Buy yeah, I agree he wrote some decent songs and "Popsicles and Icicles" is one of my favorite girl group singles.

I bought Mrs SB "Manna" in the early days of our relationship. Despite that, she still married me.

I never owned their music but when I was 19YO I had a gf who was a big fan so I heard them a lot. A little too poppy for me back then but I can appreciate the craftsmanship of the songs for what they are and I don’t mind hearing those songs when it happens. It brings back fond memories of that early relationship and even though she sent me a “dear john” letter (I was living in Florida in the Navy) I remember the good times.

I feared as much.

He did his best work between '69 and '72, C.

Could've been. I reckon hatz must've had a prime sometime, certainly before he hit message boards.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
