What do you think of this lot?

Postby Minnie the Minx » 13 Sep 2020, 16:13

True to my usual form, I thought this lot were "new" when Austin radio started playing them to death - but of course, they are not new at all! IDLES - from Brizzol.

What do you make of it all? I'm liking it more and more, I must say!

I like them. I've seen them many times, usually supporting other bands in the locality. For me, it boils down to the music and live performance. Both are definitely the sort of thing that I tend to gravitate to. If I have a criticism, and it goes quite a lot of other bands with me lately, the recorded music doesn't engage me as much as the shows. I guess thats normal though. The lp Brutalism, that garnered wider publicity, is pretty much a perfect snapshot of their art. They get a LOT of stick from Sleafords and others for lacking working class credentials but they honestly don't give a fuck.

Yeah, they sound like they would be good live.
They were on the radio again today. Austin is playing them to death!

They are indeed great live - I saw them twice over the last couple of years. Don't care what Sleaford says, I think Talbot is an excellent frontman and comes across in interviews as erudite and just generally a lovely man, full of self-doubt and passion. His lockdown interview with Anna Calvi is well worth tracking down.

Good call (Hi min x)
Have you listened to Black midi and the murder capital also?
Takes a little patience but they are growers.

Hello love! X
No I haven’t, but I will. Thanks for the heads up.
The average time it takes for me to listen to something ‘new’ is, I have worked out, about 8-10 years and I only really know if I’m
Playing it on our podcast and I go to see when it came out. I don’t have my ear to the ground, really!

Murder Capital opened for Idles when i first saw them last year - one of the few parts of the gig I remember as I went a bit crazy that night...!

I've got the debut, and it's excellent, but a bit one paced. Very noisy and the singer seems to be a very angry man

But he's also sort of the opposite - supremely optimistic and joyful. One thing I love about what they do is to subvert the whole football hooligan culture of the UK - a lot of their songs are almost football chants but completely stripped of toxic masculinity and replaced with a supreme love of the different, trans, gay etc.
