Mute Records announce box set of 4'33 cover versions

Postby Darkness_Fish » 17 Jan 2019, 21:45

I think this is serious: http://mute.com/stumm-433

From The Normal, the artist that started Mute, to the label’s newest signing,
K Á R Y Y N, STUMM433 will feature a huge array – over 50 – of Mute artists including Depeche Mode, Yann Tiersen, Liars, Silicon Teens, Irmin Schmidt and many more, all presenting their own interpretation of one piece of music: John Cage’s game-changing composition, 4’33”.

Better than a new album by The Who, anyway.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Oh, great, now I'm going to have that piece in my head all day.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

The best interpretation of this was by the BBC when they ran a late night series based on it a few years back - they just recorded the ambient noise in a number of different areas (I remember very vividly one recorded in a marina, so you heard gulls, the wind whipping through sail cables, lapping water and so on). It pisses me off when audiences at live renditions try to keep very quiet - they should be coughing, rustling their programmes, receiving phonecalls etc. The conductor should also be beating time, but they usually don't.

And my main piano performance piece - though I often go for the edited 2'10 version, which is enough for an assembly.

I am sure someone released a set of blank cdr's as exactly that about 20 years ago. Maybe Miller is going senile...

Serious question: what time signature is 4'33 in?
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I think I'm going to hold out for the far broader range of artistic styles and musical genres covered on
Now That's What I Call 4'33.

There's of course the completely blank LP-sides of The Wit & Wisdom Of Ronald Reagan.

Mike Batt doing something similar on one of his albums, and getting sued by the Cage-estate was hilarious too.

Dave Grohl’s got his version on the next Foos disc

‘David and John: Together, at last’

“Silence, like you’ve never heard before”

With a pic of Cage photoshopped into a stock photo of the Foo Fighters (bucking the wellknown trend of the other way around)

probably
