Africa: Which country's music do you collect the most

Nkosi sikelela,

Woza Moya (woza, woza),
Woza Moya (woza, woza),
Woza Moya, Oyingcwele.
Usisikelele, Thina lusapho lwayo

The first big hit from Africa we know by its American covers, "Wimoweh" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". 1939 saw "Mbube", which was a major success for Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds, reportedly selling more than 100,000 copies in South Africa alone.

Here's what I've got, not counting Paul Simon's "Graceland":

The Flames (Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar went on to join the Beach Boys)
Hugh Masekela
Miriam Makeba ("Mama Africa")
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Johnny Clegg And Savuka
Abdullah Ibrahim ("Dollar Brand")

plan on getting:
Lucky Dube

Getting into Egyptian musicians lately, so I'd say Egypt.

Tie between Ethiopia and Nigeria.
That Ethiopiques series of comps is truly a treasure trove that just keeps giving.

I think I've read somewhere that funk is big in Ethiopia. All I really know about from there is Mulatu Astatke. Got a concert on DVD. He performed in Denmark recently.

Mali, no question.

Toumani Diabate, Tinariwen, Ali Farka Toure, Rokia Traore, Amadou and Mariam...

An incredibly rich musical tradition that I haven't even started to plumb.

Yep, old school heavy heavy funk was big until the damn military junta shut down the nightclubs. Mulatu is the greatest. But there's loads of ballads and stuff after that. Even the very traditional stuff is good.

Senegal is another spot I dig...love the mbalax sound.

I've been on a pretty big Zamrock kick the past several years: Ngozi Family, WITCH, Amanaz, Rikki Ililonga, etc.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Wow.

Rikki Ililonga is the only name I recognize, there, and I like what I've heard. I'll chase down some of those others.

Yeah, I'd read (I think in the liner notes to a Rikki Ililonga compilation) that an AIDS epidemic had wiped out key members of the scene. Sounds horrific. I just picked up a new Zamrock compilation/book a couple weeks ago in Austin but haven't had time to unwrap it yet. Will probably give the disc a spin tonight.
