Re: Paul Weller, solo - where do I start?
The first album Mike mentions above is very good - as are "Wild Wood" and "Stanley Road".
There was then a period which just didn't click with me up until the trilogy of "As Is Now" "22 Dreams" and "Wake Up The Nation" all of which were at least very good, at best quite superb.
Recmmendations as starters would be "Wild Wood" from the first three and "Wake Up The Nation" from the second period.
Yomp will be along to add his customary swivel eye drivel.

When you look at his solo discography there's a hell of a lot of albums, I'd forgotten about some of them.

Re: Paul Weller, solo - where do I start?
I liked the stoney, retro-hippie vibe of Wildwood and thinking at the time how come everybody doesn't make music like this. It's akin to McCartney's (Wings) first solo. That said, I have respect for his covers album, Studio 150. Not that Weller isn't a good songwriter but he surely isn't great, but he is a good singer and the album is very well made and a real kick to hear the covers.
Question authority.

Agree with comments above - you could also do worse that the two Modern Classics comps as some of the records are patchy.

I think Yomp is your man here for a balanced appraisal of his career to date.

Butch Manly wrote:I loved the Jam at their absolute best (seriously, three of their albums are absolute utter gems in my opinion) and yet I've never listened to their first two albums.
You should rectify that as soon as possible, if only to hear Life From A Window (on This Is The Modern World)
As for solo Weller, as people have already said Wild Wood, Stanley Road and I’d add Heavy Soul to the list.
His latest is taking a bit of getting used to.
Give a shit or be a shit.

Wild wood, Stanley Road and the first album are indeed places to start.

All I would say is that Paul Weller makes Pete Wylie look brilliant.

For a nice, simple overview of his Jam, Style Council and solo careers search out the single-disc version of 'Hit Parade'. Quite a good selection from his solo career on tht disc.
His covers album , 'Studio 150' is well worth a listen, especially his version of 'Early Morning Rain'.
