Re: Neil Diamond or Carole King?
Both have written and recorded great songs.
Tapestry really is a brilliant album, but I own nothing else by Carole King. I only have compilations by Neil Diamond, but a couple of them are live albums. He is a brilliant live performer. I haven't seen Carole King live.
No Kylie if not for Carole King, of course.
I think Neil by a smidgen, but do love Carole's classics

Billie Holiday was of course the real influence on ol' Kyles

They don't sing any Carole King songs at Boston Red Sox games.
They both started the same way, as songwriters. I love Tapestry, but I think Diamond has better songs. But that's today. Tomorrow, I might vote King.

Of course they don't.
Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star
Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America
Home, don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm
Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm
Everywhere around the world
They're coming to America
Every time that flag's unfurled
They're coming to America
Got a dream to take them there
They're coming to America
Got a dream they've come to share
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
They're coming to America
Today, today, today, today, today
My country 'tis of thee
Today
Sweet land of liberty
Today
Of thee I sing
Today
Of thee I sing
Today

This, on the basis of strength in depth. THe very top echelon is KIng's though *Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Goin' Back and Wasn't Born To Follow). Still I'd rather listen to Diamond as a performer.

I'd agree with that.

I don’t think it is close on the basis of songs. I’m an unapologetic Diamond fan - but King wrote a mountain of great songs.
I actually also prefer her as a singer too. She is remarkably soulful.

I love some Diamond, particularly the Bang stuff, but it's not close. King's most "ambitious" stuff is still incredibly grounded, both lyrically and musically. Neil commits every bad songwriting sin - wordiness, over-emoting, gratuitous sentimentality - and I'm not sure King is really guilty of ANY of them. She can be a bit dull sometimes, but never off-putting in the way Neil can be at his worst.
Best King vs. best Neil - King (although it's close)
Average King vs. average Neil - King (although it's close)
Bad King vs. bad Neil - King (and it's nowhere near close)

Re: Neil Diamond or Carole King?
for what it's worth, this is the only one of these where I really have absolutely no doubt whatsoever who I'd cjoose.
It's Carole King by quite some - as much as I like some of Neil's stuff (including material penned for others) he never wrote a single tune that even came close to something as beautiful as "Crying In The Rain". As Fred Neverknows said, her demo is 'enough to make grown men weep'.
He was right you know. He generally was.

Carole King is a clear winner here for me. Neil's Greatest Hits is a record I've always enjoyed though.
