Radioland

One of my favourites. It perfectly evokes childhood memories of both Schneider and Hutter listening to the radio as children, where they tuned into Stockhausen on "Music of our time" on WDR. Those primitive electronic broadcasts would transport listeners "to other galaxies" and must have had quite a profound effect on their musical imaginations.

Darkness_Fish wrote:Now we're talking. Absolutely fucking magnificent. Probably my favourite Kraftwerk album, and one of their finest track. It's a massive leap forward in my view, it has that essential simplicity that all the best Kraftwerk tunes have, such a simple repetitive melody, but they've properly realised how to construct a fully fleshed out, deep sound. That choral synth backing is majestic, a proper touch of genius. I wouldn't say this is where pop music would supersede their experimentalism, I'd say it's where they realised that the experimentation can sit well within the confines of a pop tune as a coherent whole.

It is bloody good, isn't it?

Absolutely.
My favorite album too- equal parts cold, scary and melodic.
The lead track is special... I remember sitting in the car waiting for my dad to return from the shop when I was 8 and hearing this on the radio... completely different from anything that I had heard before.
I really dislike the version they made of it afterward, with the anti-nuclear message and completely removing the brilliant tension-moment in the middle.

To be honest, I really like that version too. It's an entirely different track, really, and hearing it live was absolutely immense, the sheer quality and volume of the sound made it one of the highlights. It's probably not entirely shocking that loud robotic voices appeal to me though.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

And there has been a lot different versions during the years
When I saw them in Stockholm, 3-D tour (2014 if I remember correct)
they almost reverted back to the old arrangements of the songs
It was brilliant, a perfect mix of the old and new...

I applaud the sentiment for sure. I was always hoping that they would revert to play this live closer to the original version and the recent Katalog - series of concerts was the perfect moment when they played Radioactivity in full.... after Geigercounter they played it only to start it off original to transfer it to the mutated version halfway through. Rather disappointing even though the concerts were superb.
Bit weird considering that Radioactivity is a concept-album where the topic is celebrated rather than warned about.

Well it's not really "celebrated". I think there are sinister overtones to it that reflect the potential "menace" of nuclear energy that contrast nicely against the nostalgia for the radio.

Just post this as it could be of interest to some of you!

Steinberg caught up with Kraftwerk member Fritz Hilpert to talk about technology, 3-D Der Katalog and much else besides.

Hm. Nothing like a little technical product endorsement for Cubase.

Hope the hard questions like 'can you remix Ralf & Florian in Dolby Atmos' will follow suit.

Ätherwellen

One of their most underrated songs - capturing that motorik/techno beat perfectly with the sort of melody you'd hear in on a TV/Radio indent. And in the lyrics

Wenn wellen schwingen ferne stimmen singen

that model of absolute economy that would feature so strongly later. There's no need to say anything else.

This is probably the best interview Kraftwerk ever gave, recorded during their US tour, featuring both Ralf and Florian, and when a lot of their concepts were quite young. They talk about video in particular.

Florian - "We used to do a lot of complicated bullshit in the past. To begin with, everybody wants to play as many notes as possible in the 1st minute"

Ralf - "A guitar is a very pre-programmed type of instrument. A synthesizer is very open"

Just loved the timbre in Die Stimme Der Energie....Ich bin ihr Diener und Herr zugleich- I am your servant and your master.

I heard Antenna first in a jukebox somewhere in The Hague in a dilapidated old bar. The art of simplism, It is such a clear step to the metronomik of The Robots. Terrific song.

Antenna is a lovely track, vocals stepped well back in the mix and applied with tons of echo to emphasise the idea of a transmission bouncing around the atmosphere. I love that little snatch of typical simplistic melody which floats through for a few seconds.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
