The BCB Blue Note Corner

Postby fange » 09 Feb 2018, 08:09

A corner to celebrate the songs, albums, musicians, players, cover art, books and anything else associated with the label that Alfred Lion, Francis Wolff and Max Margulis started in 1939.

Feeling down and... er, blue?

Well, here's the aural equivalent of a vitamin shot and a prescription from your local quack. A beautiful set of soulful, invigorating hard bop jazz.

Tina Brooks will never be more than a footnote in most jazz histories, but his tenor playing is strong and inventive despite his drug problems, and the band here (especially Freddie Hubbard and the rhythm section of Sam Jones and Art Taylor) put in performances which are great across the board. The Hubb is often jaw-droppingly magnificent, but nothing new there despite the fact he was still only fucking 22.

Actually, this record would make a good companion-piece listen with Hubbard's debut, Open Sesame, as Brooks and Jones play on that too, and they were recorded within only days of each other.

'True Blue'

'Good Old Soul'

Forget the winter blues.

Don Wuz is now the director (?) of Blue Note records and what he says about restoration and re-releases is fascinating.
Question authority.

lol: Yeah, a rather unusual nickname. His real given name was Harold, so maybe even Tina was preferable.

As I said elsewhere I bought a lot of the RvG remasters when they came out at 3 $ a pop.

I like them all (well, some more than others) except for the Grachan Moncur and I stayed away from the guitar Jazz or any vocals.

But those now posted here I don't have.

So please, Ange, don't do this to me :D

B♭
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

The 2nd track off Hank Mobley's excellent A Caddy for Daddy LP, 'The Morning After'...

Hank Mobley — tenor sax; Curtis Fuller — trombone; Lee Morgan — trumpet; McCoy Tyner — piano; Bob Cranshaw — bass; Billy Higgins — drums.

A risky move by the then relatively new record company.

These may be the greatest sides that Monk ever recorded.

It's interesting to see how this all played out and how he got to record for Blue Note. It's this recording that the Baroness listened to, and according to her biography why she decided to relocate to NYC.

I bought a poster of this album cover at the Hang It Up Gallery on Bourbon St. almost 20 years ago when I was just getting interested in jazz (forgive crap photo):

It's been in the cardboard tube for most of that time. Maybe I'll finally get it framed this year.

Monk is the best. Pretty easily my favorite jazz musician.

Monk is one of those artists who was a bit of a doorway for me, though early on it was the Riverside material, and i only came to his BN sessions in my late 20s.

Something like 'Criss Cross' is just about the perfect mix of melodic hooks and rhythmic groove.
