It is very dull and I thought so at the time - hackneyed and derivative musical ideas, piss poor vocals, weak songwriting. I think it got a lot of undeserved media attention and hype at the time, but the longer distance people travel from that, the clearer it is that they weren't any cop.

He found his voice again after decades in the wilderness, but the ideas and songs were a mixed bag. I have to agree with those arguing that sentiment elevated it. And that's OK, in a way. Our feelings will always come into this and that's why it's things like Bowie, Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar that get the top spots.

I think Blackstar benefitted from your voting system. Nobody, but nobody, on here thinks it's the finest album of the last 17 years but many of us chucked it on our lists - probably when we were casting around for those final few records to make it up to the thirty - because it is very good and, yes, because of how it connected with us due to the circumstances of its release.

That's perhaps true but it did also get the most points of any album overall. Any voting system is going to have its flaws. If I'd gone by points first then that bloody Coil album would have been joint second!

Perhaps the old-school "rank them 1-30 and they get points in reverse order" might have worked but again, Coil...

You say this as though it isn't regularly lionised in the musical press as one of the best albums of the period.
What you mean is you don't like it anymore, but yours isn't a widespread view outside of BCBthink really is it?

I love it when obvious Nathan Barleys get together to laugh at other people for being Nathan Barleys
The BCB list is Nathan Barley in 100 album format
But then Nathan Barleys aren't blessed with much self awareness.

The idea that Nathan Barley listens to The Libertines is risible, he obviously listens to Four Tet, The Fence Collective and God Speed You Black Emperor! like you and G.

Well it would be pretty worrying if you couldn't see through a fourth hand retread of the first Clash album.
But that still makes it better than most of the gash on that list including the number 1
If you go to any part of the non-specialist popular music press ( NME, Mojo, Q etc ) and find a poll of the greatest albums of the millennium or noughties as voted by musical worthies Up The Bracket will be there near the top of the list in every one, I'd lay my life savings on it.

Get out of the BCB bubble G, it isn't the real world, no one out there is buying the sort of crap that we are apparently listening to apart from you, Goat Boy and Tom Ravenscroft.

I'd take the Beatles and Abba and maybe a couple of others from that list. Otherwise I am in the unusual position of agreeing with Hightea here. Our list at least offers a pleasant surprise or two.
