Sorry Baron, I've been trying to build up the courage to play that clip you posted ... but haven't been able to do it. Maybe one day. Even just the descriptions posted have given me hives.

This is from the "legendary" concert that Matt Wilson and The Fish were raving about last week? Christ, it's fucking dire, isn't it? They take a perfectly fine Motown song, add a disco edge to it and then slather on the laziest vocals this side of Perry Como. This song is supposed to be uplifting and fun! Fucking bunch of lazy hippie junkies.
And it think I was afraid when I opened the post that it would be Bowie and Jagger.

Except Perry Como wasn't lazy. He loved the nightlife. He had to boogie.

I believe that if you go back to the source he actually loved to "Bogey".

I voted 'shit', but to its credit, at least it's unrelenting shit. No half-measures here.
There is some Dead, even from this period, that I like. But they do have a way of pulling all the groove out of things. FWIW, their "Good Lovin'" is even worse.

Re: B's Shit or Hit Ep. 1 "Dancin' In The Streets"
I want to quote some relevant passage from Baron's opening scree here, but there are just too many that apply.
Now - I know a couple of people...died in the wool Deadheads, known them since...well, nearly 30 years, now. They were my gateway to the whole "You'd never know what was actually good about the Grateful Dead from the shit these people listen to" phenomenon, God bless them.
Anyhow - these people have supported me along my own musical journey fairly unconditionally (this word may be key) over the years. No matter where life took us all, they always seemed to buy my records and/or go to my concerts. Anyone would kill for that kind of unlimited devotion, and I've never taken it for granted.
Now - here's the thing. Like anyone in the performing arts, I have good nights and bad nights. And whatever band I've been in, there has been a fairly wide spectrum of quality - sometimes you just kick that shit in the ass, and sometimes you maybe fail to make the most of a performance. Hopefully, your averages are good, and your worst isn't all that unbearable. I know it from either side of the stage (recent conversations about certain acts make it clear to me that I never really saw ____ on a great night, and that I might have only ever seen ___ at a rare peak).
The phenomenon I've noticed (and, again, this is sort of "jarred loose" by a number of Baron's observations) is that "repertoire" always seemed to be prized above "successful interpretation" - this may be a function of the sort of "Oh, man - they did 'El Paso'!" function of obsessive Dead collecting. I/we would perform these concerts, and...you know, most people would have it in them to assess the general peaks and valleys for what they were, but the veteran heads had no such hangups or burdens. We could totally shit the bed on a cover song, and all you would get afterwards was some wide eyed "Oh, man - you did Sparks!!!! Killer!!!!" (or 'Pretty Ballerina', or 'Rock the Boat', or 'Pink Turns to Blue', etc.). Now - I certainly knew when we'd fallen well short of our mark/potential - specifically if it was something that we'd really just made triumphant on some prior occasion or occasions (this is life - sometimes the first time you do a thing is the peak of the enterprise, and sometimes your twentieth and most objectively experienced attempt is pure fucking garbage...this sort of thing makes the victories that much sweeter).
But - yeah, I think all those years of conditioning...listening to an endless stream of bootlegged Grateful Dead concerts...really bred a deeply unconditional assessment: somehow the fact that we bothered to show up and murder "Theme From a Summer Place" was all that was required. We sufficiently ticked a box by just falling somewhere within the legal limit of having performed the song.
I ultimately have a lot to thank these people for.

They've never been shit or hit to me. I just can't muster up the energy to love or hate them. They're okay.

Oh, yeah - THAT trainwreck of an evening was faithfully documented by an attendant hippie as it happens. I always figured I'd save the audio if I needed it as evidence in some internal conflict.

Re: B's Shit or Hit Ep. 1 "Dancin' In The Streets"
always felt the dead fans are too high on the spring 77 tour. While the dead were energetic and played excellent jams of songs it didn't compare to the late 60's and early 70's tours.
In regards to dancing in the street. The dead had been playing it for years and I thought they did a decent job recreating it in 77. Far from a favorite but okay.
In regards to LeBaron's comments- love the disco/funk vibe so what if its not like other disco that is what makes it great. They took their vibe and installed it into the modern world(well at the time). I thought it was a nice twist especially the guitar and bass lines.

Facebook connections will know that I had a run in with the studio version of this today at the dentist’s office. I still kinda enjoy the long version.

I've never liked the choice of cover tunes the Dead has done. There are exceptions but this is one of my least favorites. They are shit at Chuck Berry songs too.
