Re: David Bowie RIP
This paragraph from Lester Bangs' review of 'Station to Station' made me chuckle...
Lester Bangs wrote:This is the first Bowie album without a lyric sheet, and I'm glad, because aside from previously voiced reservations I've always agreed with Fats Domino that it's more fun to figure them out for yourself. The first line on the album is the worst: "The return of the thin white duke / Throwing darts in lovers' eyes." Somehow, back in Rock Critics' Training School, when they told me about "pop poetry," I didn't and still don't think that they were talking about this, which is not only pretentious and mildly unpleasant, but I am currently wrestling with a terrible paranoia that this is Bowie talking about himself, I have a nightmare vision in my mind of him opening the set in his new tour by striding out onstage slowly, with a pained look in his eyes and one spotlight following him, mouthing these words. And, quite frankly, that idea terrifies me. Because if it's true, it means he's still as big an idiot as he used to be and needs a little more cocaine to straighten him out.

There’s nothing post Lodger that’s really necessary is there?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

You'll come round, just as you did with Lodger.
SM isn't perfect - the second side is patchy with a couple of weak tracks. The rest of it is pretty great though which makes it "necessary".

Glastonbury show released - CD/Vinyl/DVD
"stunning performance at the Glastonbury Festival at the beginning of the new millennium is to be issued on audio and video formats for the first time. Glastonbury 2000 is due at the end of November.
Bowie performed on the Sunday night headline slot on 25 June 2000 at the famous festival and this new release includes the entire 21 song set which was full of ‘hits’ and, in Bowie’s words, “a couple quirks”. Even better, only 30 minutes was ever shown on TV, so the 2CD+DVD set is a must, with video of the full performance.
The audio is newly mastered and is also available on 3LP vinyl and as a 2CD set (without the DVD). Also this set features new artwork from Jonathan Barnbrook and notes from Caitlin Moran."
Track Listing :
CD 1
Introduction (Greensleeves)
Wild Is The Wind
China Girl
Changes
Stay
Life On Mars?
Absolute Beginners
Ashes To Ashes
Rebel Rebel
Little Wonder
Golden Years
CD 2
Fame
All The Young Dudes
The Man Who Sold The World
Station To Station
Starman
Hallo Spaceboy

Re: David Bowie RIP
Funny how an album that DB didn't seem to want to release during his lifetime is suddenly a definitive lost treasure worth a gob-smacking UK335 for the double CD and DVD after his death. While I'm sure there'll be a fair few DB fans buying it, I won't be one of them

Re: David Bowie RIP
Who says record companies don't listen?
As a result of my initial post decrying their naked greed, I can't help but notice that they've just slashed the price by 90% from the £335 I originally quoted.

Incredible/crowdpleasing setlist of course but the pacing/sequencing of that set seems quite strange - maybe it works.
