Father John Misty - Bored In The USA

Postby morganspacehorse » 30 Dec 2014, 17:21

I remember there were quite a few fans of Father John Misty's first album on here, has everyone seen his newest Letterman appearance? I can't decide whether it's genius or complete nonsense, probably somewhere in the middle but I think edging towards the former. His new album'll be interesting at least.

It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

I really wish he wasn't so corny. It's like John Grant without the pathos.

He sings everything the same way and he has very little in the way of tunes.

Which is a shame, because in theory he's really quite good. In practice it's samey, verbose, hook-free, metamusic; knowing and arch in a terribly dumb way, if that's possible. His music is the aural equivalent of an attractive girl, educated beyond her intelligence. All sullen looks and cryptic comments to hide the vacuity.

He's doing good work for a drummer. I'll wager he gets heaps of poontang.
Goodness gracious me.

Sorry for the late response...

I agree with a few of the comments, he does sing everything in the same way, which is fine when it works, but grating when it doesn't. "I'm Writing a Novel" from Fear Fun just isn't suited to his voice at all & there's another clunker on there which I can't remember right now.

His whole thing is extremely arch at times too, but honestly, I don't get the impression it's to impress or to hide anything, I think it's genuinely just to entertain himself. Maybe I fall in the sweet spot where I'm thick enough to appreciate the humour without feeling (or just without noticing?) that I'm being hit over the head with it. Obviously some songs are flat-out ridiculous but some are pretty straight, "Fun Times In Babylon" doesn't come across as silly to me at all, even though there are some lyrics which would never usually make it into that kind of song. I think it's pretty beautiful. That "Chateau Lobby" song I posted earlier in this thread too.

That said, when he gets the balance right I think it's great. "Now painted ladies wanna hold my gun / and wonder if the whole time I'd been acting / when I sang Moon River in that silent film" it's hard not to enjoy how absurd a lyric that is, I mean how specific can you get while still having it fit the "Only Son of The Ladies' Man" lyric? It's almost time-stamped.

Wouldn't matter a fuck though if the music isn't up to much but I think the Fear Fun album sounds fantastic, incredible arrangements and production, and I really think his melodies are great too, surprised to hear "little in the way of tunes". "Hook-free" is probably fair enough though.

Anyway I'm really looking forward to his new album although I expect at least 1/3 of it will frustrate the hell our of me!

Well, fuck me if the latest - I Love You, Honeybear - isn't actually really good.

He still sings things the same way but this album is good.
Goodness gracious me.

Yes, together with the new Decemberists the best albums so far this year.
Hear you on the vacuity-comment- it is something I usually levy at those bedroom artists like Bright Eyes.

Agreed on the Father John Misty album.

Decemberists still isn't quite clicking but I am finding it more rewarding with each listen.

Don't know if anyone saw FJM playing "I Love You , Honeybear" live on Jools Holland, it was phenomenal, what a fantastic song.

"Oh honeybear, honeybear, honeybear
Mascara, blood, ash, and cum
On the Rorschach sheets where we make love"

Way to open a song... best thing Ive heard for ages
