^ Blimey, Tatsuya Yoshida looks different there.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Van Dyke Parks - Discover America 1972

Hard to categorize this guy. A caribbean-influenced LP of pop tunes delivered with Parks' effete, Southern vocals which are oftentimes buried in the mix. So far off the beaten path that it's difficult to imagine anyone at Warners thinking this would sell. It's interesting, I'll give it that.

Tim Buckley Lorca 1970

This is where Buckley becomes so avante garde in his fusion of folk, jazz and experimental music that he alienates most of his fan base, which wasn't that big to begin with. I can still hang, though I wouldn't put this on with company around.

Neil Young's Homegrown.

His unreleased album that should have come out in 1975, but at a listening party he decided he liked Tonight's The Night, which was on the same tape, better.

One had to stay unreleased, apparently, so it was Homegrown for 45 years. Some of the songs have been released later in the same or different versions. But the album as a whole is a great listen - middle-of-the-road slight tunes like Love Is A Rose and Little Wing sound different and deeper here in the company of strangeness like Florida and We Don't Smoke It No More.
"Nothing would count as a fulfilment in a world in which literally nothing is important but self-fulfilment."

- Charles Taylor

It is a phenomenal collection.
These four sets - 77, 78, 79 and 80 - take me from 13 at the beginning of '77 to 17 at the end of '80
That is formative
I have a similar love for 71-74 as well, but I can't deny the breadth of the songs on display here trump the early part of the decade.

I'm playing teh 77 one right now having just uploaded it
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

Tim Buckley Starsailor 1970

On a Buckley kick at the moment. This is his most difficult album, and not one I'd recommend unless you're already into his music - in which case you probably already know this record. "Song to the Siren" is here, and I also like "Monterey," "Moulin Rouge," and "Down by the Borderline," but Christ, he was on Zappa's Straight label by then, and there's no fuckin' way any of the suits (if there were any around) thought this stuff would sell.
