Oh come on - for god’s sake!

Is this an intended wind-up?

Whatever next - absolute nonsense

At least twelve of the lad’s best tracks are missing

The ones that come instantly to mind:

Electricity (with Ry)
Sloppy Boot Stomp
I’m Gonna Boogalize You Baby
Black Eyed Beans from Venus
Spotlight Kid
Upon the My-O-My [from UG]

God help us!

As Stephen Stills says on Stephen Stills Live at the start of Black Queen when an audience member starts laughing - he says:

‘One thing the blues ain’t and that’s funny’

The same thing applies to Don my cloth-eared, acerbic friend

‘One thing the Captain ain’t is the butt of any wind- up joke’

In the spirit of the ‘No Vowels’ thread on NDL

Grrrr

In reality, the Captain must be one of the most divisive artists in popular culture. Even his most ardent of fans will hold their head in their hands as often as beating their chests in adulation

How pompous is that?! My God, Stephen, are the class playing up? "Black Queen is the ultimate indulgent song by Stills. Blues, my backside. It's just a vehicle for him to pose, an insufferable five minutes of average guitar playing and gruff vocalising. Stephen, remove your coked up head from up your backside and lighten up. NB For a good few years, Stills was my absolute hero. What a waste.

mudshark wrote:The good Captain's music is an acquired taste, of course. A bit like durian fruit. And I can fully understand that people who like Safe as Milk, Decals, etc., weren't exactly enamored with UG and MBBJ. The songs are in a very different style. Band members like Art Tripp and John Zorn hated doing the songs and hated UG when it came out, but they were dirt-poor and they too wanted a Hit Single in the charts (with a Bullet) so they could have groupies come on their bus. It was not to be.

UG is actually the first Beefheart album I ever heard (on a cassette tape was inexplicably available in a store in Johor Bahru in the mid 80s), and I liked it very big! Full Moon Hot Sun, Lazy Music and the opening tune (the name escapes me) are really pleasant songs. It turned me on to more of his stuff, which I liked a lot better. Still have a fondness of the album though. But no matter what Robertff is saying: MBBJ is absolute drivel. With the entire Magic Band gone, Don had lost his footing completely. I think it should be erased from his CV.

Poor Don. Frustrated by his lack of success, especially compared to his Lancaster buddy, he made too many wrong decisions, firing Ry Cooder being the first/worst one. And when reads this, he'll growl in his grave: his best effort is Bongo Fury :-).

From what I've read and understand Ry Cooder fired (quit) Beefheart and not the other way round and Bongo Fury is a goodish album but far from being the Captain's best. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be an opinion agreed to by many - if in fact by anyone else.

.

The BONGO remark was of course a bit tongue in cheek. It is very much a Zappa album and Don was allowed to tag along. He might not have been very happy, but it sure made him some decent money. I read a long article (possibly a short book, even) many years ago about the early days of the Magic Band. Beefheart had stage fright and would throw all sort of tantrums before going on and while being on stage. Ry took charge and effectively grew into a leadership role. This is not what our beefy hero had envisaged for HIS Magic band, so he made it impossible for Cooder to stay in the band. I'd say he was chased away because he cramped the Captain's questionable style.
There's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over

Why are the album titles far more interesting than the actual "music"?
