I wouldn’t change a thing about FO. It works as a pop/rock album as well as a deliberate work of art, with FZ setting out his stall, for the audience, AND his record company.

Although I love the album, they could actually have done their own culling ie "Whipping Post" 22mins 40 secs and "You don't love me" 19 mins 6 secs. Do they REALLY have to be that long? Half the length of the "jams" boys, and you'd have room for at least two more tracks eg "Midnight Rider" for one.

Are you soft lad?

Of course they do

The two tracks to which you refer are superb and could be even longer as far as I’m concerned!

One of the greatest live double albums ever made

Of course, a later CD version was expanded even further with superb extra tracks

This is a nice 'newer' remixed version:

Wiki

The Fillmore Concerts
On October 10, 1992, The Fillmore Concerts, an expanded version of At Fillmore East, was released as a two-disc CD. It includes all the songs from the original album, plus the live songs from Eat a Peach – "One Way Out", "Trouble No More", and "Mountain Jam" – and two additional tracks – "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" and "Drunken Hearted Boy" – all of which were recorded at the same concerts. The album was remixed from the concert recordings, and a few of the songs are alternate takes, so the same songs sound somewhat different from those on the original album

And of course it was a single album in the UK, albeit a fairly long one.

Uriah Heep's "Black" live album would be a bit more palatable without the dreadful R&R medly, DP's Made In Japan without The Mule, TYA's Recorded Live without I'm Going Home and Hobbit.

The Moody Blues? They had a double live album (actually only three sides were live).

Having discussed this double album question so many times, I've finally come around to feeling one should never cut an album down that one doesn't basically already love. In other words, you should only criticize from a place of love. You must feel the album would be its "better self" as a single, not just because you don't like certain songs. It's a theory anyway.

A couple I feel that way about:

Odessa - Bee Gees
Blue Moves - Elton John

A good point well made Jim-lad

As a massive Zappa fan, this is an album I love but could do without the 'audience participation' track, Be-Bop Tango (Of the Old Jazzmen's Church), which takes a up the whole of side 4

I love Sandinista in all its weirdness. Even side 6!. I guess it's just grown on me.
I'm 100% with Roxy.
90% sure that JJ cale never issued a double album. Steve Miller neither.

This is closer to my taste. There's probably a dozen (maybe) top-tier Clash songs on Sandinista, and then possibly another handful of 'pretty good' cuts leftover. The rest is disposable.
